I’m planning to challenge myself to buy no new clothes for one year.
I’ve made announcements like these before, but I’ve bombed way early on. Let’s give this another go. Starting on my birthday, January 15, I am starting a clothing shopping ban.
Yes… that’s 7 days away and gives me time to shop but I’ll be 40 next year and thought it would be a good challenge to not shop the last year of my 30s. We can call it a #freezeto40 .
I’ll be honest, this isn’t to save money or make room in my closet. We oh no I do a lot of thrift shopping and my closet has more room than I will ever be able to fill completely.
The truth is I don’t need clothes. I love shopping & I love thrifting, BUT rarely actually love everything I buy.
I’m hoping if I follow through this is a great way to focus and really evaluate whether I need an item or not. The answer is probably no.
As with any major changes or fasting, cheating is highly likely so I have predetermined a few exceptions. I understand that won’t make it a complete fast or ban but I’m OK with that.
Please feel free to check in with me regularly to see how I’m doing.
So what will I allow myself to buy?
- A bridesmaids dress for my nieces wedding. I think I have one that will work but I don’t want to lock myself in right now.
- Any nautical print Lilly Pulitzer shift dress. We have a sailboat. I love nautical prints. I love only Pulitzer. I’m not willing to cave. I know I will love it.
- We are going on our first cruise this summer and I want to have the option to buy a new swimsuit or clothes for the cruise. I may not but I don’t want to deprive myself of shopping for such a fun event. Again, this challenge isn’t a money thing, it’s a practicality thing and there’s nothing practical about shopping for vacation. It’s purely fun.
- I will buy a matching wine themed shirt for my annual wine trip with my girlfriends. It’s just something we do. I rarely ever wear them again but that’s OK.
- New slouchy black booties. I bought a pair a few years ago for $ 25 at a bargain department store and I wear them almost every day from September-March. They’re probably around 10¢ per wear right now. However they this cheap felt that’s supposed to look like suede but they look cheap. I love the fit and the style so I’m hoping to find a high-end leather or suede pair.
OK that about sums it up. I have one week and I fully admit I plan to do some shopping.
I will update you with any purchases before the ban starts & and I will update at various points throughout the year.
I may even go into a little more detail on more precise reasons explaining why I’m doing this but for now, wish me the best!
