Why I needed to whiten my teeth.

I started drinking “coffee” when I was 2 or 3. I can clearly remember sitting on the kitchen counter while my mom “turned” my earrings, sipping on my special drink. She served it in an old jelly glass and it was about 99% milk with a splash of coffee.  Just enough to make it look like ever so slightly tan. I loved my special big girl drink. Now I’m an adult and I can’t go a day without my big girl coffee. These days it’s about 95% coffee and 5% cream but I will never forget those special moments from my childhood.

I have 3 kids of my own now and sadly I chose not to carry on the coffee tradition, if they choose to drink coffee as an adult, that will be fine. Why, you might ask?! Years of coffee, tea and wine have stained my teeth. Wine? Tea? Oh, sorry. I forgot the mention how I end my day. I wind most days down with a nice hot mug of tea or a glass of red wine.

Years of enjoying multiple beverages known for staining your teeth, have definitely stained mine. Some of my stains were in patches. I’m sure I am the only one that noticed them when I used my 7X mirror, but it still bugged me.

I was thrilled with Smile Brilliant reached out, about collaborating with their teeth whitening kit.

My experience with Teeth Whitening.

The process to make my mouth guards was simple. I followed the written and photo directions and mixed the blue base paste and the white catalyst paste together.

The mixture went into the mouth guard and then the guard went into my mouth. I had to gently bite down for 2 minutes to get the impression of my teeth. It was a little painful to remove, as the mixture started to harden. I sent the impressions back and within a week had my mouth guards. I was ready to get started.

Smile Brilliant included a sensitivity gel in addition to the whitening gel.

The instruction sheet recommended I start at 45 minutes and work my way up from there, not to exceed 3 hours. During my treatment, I usually kept them in for about 90 minutes and never made it to 3 hours. I only used about half of the the sensitivity gel and I was impatient and wanted to be able to eat and drink again as quickly as possible. I never confirmed if this was a safe step to skip, but I did not have any issues. Please check with your smile brilliant contact before skipping any steps. My contact did inform me it was safe, just recommended we use it to prevent any problems and future staining.

The plastic mouth guards are a little thin and the back piece rubbed on the roof of my mouth when my tongue touched it. This resulted in minor soreness my first few treatments but as I continued, I noticed the rubbing less and less.

I also found myself inadvertently sucking to keep them on, even though I didn’t need to do this.

Smile Brilliant checked in with me multiple times to make sure everything was going as planned and I didn’t have any questions or concerns.

Conclusion.

I’m thrilled with my teeth whitening results. Our smiles are a huge part of looking our best, so I’m doing what I can, with what I have.

I’ve always hated my crooked teeth (thats another story) and my obsessive coffee and wine habit only made things worse with stains. Now I don’t feel quite as self conscience! It’s a win-win.

This was my first time ever using a whitening treatment and I’m very impressed. The results aren’t drastic and while it was difficulty to get before and after photos with the same lighting, you can see a definite improvement and less of the weird patchy stains (thanks coffee!). My husband even noticed, so thats definitely a bonus.
